Frequently Asked Questions: Using FaceBook

Q1. What is a Facebook?

Facebook is a social networking website where users can add people as friends and send them messages. They can update their personal profiles to notify friends about themselves. They also have a option to include their profile in the network, so that, everyone within the network can view the profile.  The profile typically includes their information, the status, the list of their friends, list of friends in Other Networks, Photos, Notes, Groups, and The Wall.

More than 500 million active users are on Facebook and 50% of them log onto Facebook in any given day.  That means, more than 250 million people are searching for their friends and family yesterday, today and tomorrow. 134,000,000 are U.S. residents which is 25.97% of the global audience. In total, 30 billion pieces of content (web links, news stories, blog posts, notes, photo album, etc.) are shared each month. (Reference: http://www.facebook.com/press/info.php?statistics)

Q2. What are the benefits of Facebook?

Following are some of the benefits of using Facebook:

  • Easy to find people, make connections, share photo and video etc.
  • Connect with friends, family and established contacts;
  • Easier to use than email or instance message (IM).
  • More emphasis on deep connections with others vs. who has the most connections
  • “True Friends” feature increases the transparency to selected connections; almost like having private and public profiles
  • Huge, rapidly growing installed user base
  • Inherit stickiness, third party applications, “gift giving” and personal data collection make Facebook a powerful advertising platform

Q3. Can I find my friends in my high school and college?

Yes, Facebook has several of high schools, colleges, and work networks that you may link to based on your interest.

Q4. Do I need to have a photo for my Facebook page?

No, you do not need a photo for the Facebook account. It is optional. However, adding a photo to your profile enhances the experience and exposure of your page.

Q5. Do I need to download Facebook on my computer to use it?

No, you don't need to download any software of your computer. Facebook is an Internet based application that allows users to log on anywhere in the world with an internet access and a desktop or mobile device.

Q6.How do I create a Facebook account?

Go to the Facebook (www.facebook.com) website and click on the Signup button. This will bring up a signup page. On the Sign Up page, enter your full name, email address, birthday, and desired password. If you are part of one of the Facebook’s supported high school, college, or work networks, you will be given instructions on how to affiliate yourself. If you are not a member of one of these networks, you can join one of the regional networks after registration. After you complete the sign up form, Facebook will send you an email to the address you provided. Click on the link provided in the email by Facebook to activate the account.

Q7. Can anyone see my friends listed on my Facebook Account?

Facebook provides a privacy setting page to allow users to set their own privacy. Using the privacy setting page, a user can provide their friend total control over who can view the content and the list of friends. Please note that, at most, only your friends, their friends and the people on your networks can see your profile. If you want to adjust who can find you in searches and what they can see or do with the search result, just edit the settings for your Search Privacy.

Finally, you can use the Block feature to end all interactions with a user on Facebook by entering their name in the "Block People" box. Once you find them in the search, click the "Block Person" link to the right of their name. They will no longer be able to find you using Facebook.
