Excel 2013: Using Formulas

Microsoft Excel 2013 is a popular speadsheet application used for creating management reports with formulas and functions. Microsoft Excel allow users to incorporate mathematical formulas in the spreadsheet to add (+), subtract (-), multiply (*) and divide (/) by referencing cell(s) in a spreadsheet(s). Formulas in Excel can be developed to use data in the spreadsheet cell and values to evaluate the formulas and return the result set. Because the formula references the cell address, the users have the flexibility to type and modify data in the referenced cells of the spreadsheet without affecting the formula. A formula always start with an equal “=” sign.

Following example, illustrates the use of formula in Cell K10 to display the results of adding values in cell K3 through K9:

  • To add the formula is cell K10, click on cell K10
  • While in cell K10, type “=” so Excel knows that the cell contains a formula not a value
  • Type K3+K4+K5 + K6 +K7+ K8+K9
  • Click ENTER and the result of adding the values in cell K3 through K9 will appear in Cell K10.

Excel has over 100 functions available in Excel that can be used in a formula. Following functions illustrate the use of function Sum, Average, Min and Max in an Excel formula.

  • Keep running totals – Using formulas can allow you to instantly view running totals within your spreadsheet when you update the data in a referenced cell (s). Using the function sum in your formula will compute the totals for the cells specified in the formula. For example, typing a formula: “ =sum(K3:K9)” in cell K10, will add the data in cell K3 to K9 and display the result in cell K10.
  • Computing Averages – Microsoft Excel contains function “average” that can be used to calculate the averages of data in the referenced cell. A formula like “=average(K3:K9)” in Cell K10, compute the average of numbers entered in the cells of K3 to K9 and the result will appear in cell K10, the cell where the formula was typed.
  • Creating Minimums and Maximums – If you type the formula: “=min(K3:K9)” in cell K10, then Excel will display the lowest number based on the numbers entered in cells K3 through K9. Similarly, the formula:”=max(K3:K9) in cell K10 will display the highest number based on the values entered in cell K3 through K9.

Other Excel 2010 Functions:

Excel 2010 has a number of built-in formulas you can use to make computing intricate math operations in an instant. After choosing the functions you need to use, go to the FORMULA BAR and click the INSERT FUNCTION option. This will add the function int the formula.
