Mark Zuckerberg

6. mark zuckerbergMark Zuckerberg, born in 1984, is one of the co-founders and the CEO of the social network site Facebook. He founded the site from his dorm room while he was a student at Harvard University and has an estimated net worth is $36.4 billion, making him one of the youngest billionaires today.

In the bio section of his Facebook profile, he wrote “I’m trying to make the world a more open place”. By the success of Facebook, it seems he is on the right track for making that happen. In the first quarter of 2015, Facebook had an estimated 1.44 billion active monthly users that upload photos, status updates and/or their current thoughts

Zuckerberg married Priscilla Chan, a Chinese-American from Boston, whom he met at a college fraternity party in 2003.

He grew up in a hilltop house in Dobbs Ferry, New York. His mother is a psychiatrist and his father is a dentist. Attached to the basement of his home was his father’s dentist office.

His father, Edward Zuckerberg, introduced ATARI Basic Programming to a young Mark and the house was full of computers.

One day, Edward said he would like a better way to announce a patient’s arrival than having the receptionist yell to the back of the room, so Mark built a software program that allowed the computers in the house to communicate with each other which he called ZuckNet. It was a primitive version of an instant messenger; the receptionist would use it to ping Edward, and the kids would ping each other.

Mark created computer games that his friends and family would play on. “I had a bunch of friends who were artists,” he said. “They’d come over, draw stuff, and I’d build a game out of it.”

When he was about 11, his parents hired David Newman, a software developer to be Mark’s tutor. Later, Mark started taking a graduate computer course every Tuesday and Thursday night at Mercy College. When his father dropped Mark off at his first class, the instructor said he could not bring him into the classroom and he replied that Mark was actually the student.

“He was a prodigy. Sometimes it was tough to stay ahead of him,” Newman said.

Zuckerberg entered Harvard in the fall of 2002. He loved to create simple software. His first week, at the college, he built the programs CourseMatch and then Facemash. The first allowed users to find out which classes they could take based on choices of other students. The second was a program that allowed users to look at photographs of two people and click a button on who they found more attractive.

Then, Divya Narendra and Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss reached out to Zuckerberg for a web site they were working on called Harvard Connection. Zuckerberg helped out with the site, but soon after left the project to work on his own site called Facebook. He dropped out of Harvard to run the site and the rest is history.

Zuckerberg’s vision for the site was to emphasize networking, as opposed to Harvard Connection, which emphasized dating.

Mark Zuckerberg had a film based on the founding of Facebook and the lawsuits that followed, The Social Network which was released in 2010. Zuckerberg has criticized the film for its historical inaccuracies and neither he, nor any of Facebook’s staff was involved in the production of the movie.

Facebook has become a platform for developers to develop applications that run on the site. The social-game company Zynga, creator of the games Farm Ville and Mafia Wars, has five of the top 10 games on Facebook.
