FAQ: College-Level Examination Program (CLEP)

1. What is a CLEP exam?

CLEP is a College-Level Examination Program offered by the College board in 33 subjects covering the introductory level college course material. With a passing score on one CLEP exam, students can earn three or more college credits at more than 2,900 U.S. colleges and universities. 2. What are the benefits of taking the CLEP exam?

CLEP benefits everyone, including high school students, college students, adults, service members and veterans, and professionals seeking continuing education credits. 3. What is the significant saving offered by the CLEP exam?

4. How do I know my college or university will accept the CLEP exam?

Before taking the exam, consult your admission officer or academic adviser to determine how the CLEP exam can fit within your education plan.

5. What resources are available for preparing for a CLEP exam?

The Official Study Guide at CollegeBoard is the official study resource for all 33 exams. It includes practice questions for all exams, exam descriptions, and information on how to get credit for CLEP. It also includes test-taking tips and strategies. If you plan on taking just one or two exams, you may want to purchase the individual exam guide “Individual Exam Guides.” If you are a DANTES-funded military candidate, you can obtain free study materials through your base education center. 6. I have a child who is under the age of 13. How do I register my child, who is under 13 years old, for a CLEP Exam?

Under the U.S. Federal Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), website operators are required to obtain parent guardian consent before collecting personal information from children under 13 years of age. If your child is under the age of 13, please download and complete the CLEP® Account Creation Consent Form from https://secure-media.collegeboard.org/digitalServices/pdf/clep/clep-account-consent-form-students.pdf
and return by fax to 610-628-3726 or U.S. mail to CLEP, PO Box 6600, Princeton, NJ 08541-6600.

7. What is the structure of the CLEP exam?

  • The exam contains multiple-choice questions.
  • The exams take about 90–120 minutes to complete, depending on the exam subject.
  • The student must purchase the voucher from the College Board website and schedule the exam at a CLEP authorized testing center.

8. How can I purchase the voucher for the CLEP exams?

Follow the steps listed below to purchase and register for the exam:

  1. To take the exam, you will need to purchase a voucher from the College Board website at https://clep.collegeboard.org/register
  2. Select your exam from the list
  3. Purchase the voucher for the selected exam.
  4. For the ticket expiration, refund, payment, active military fee, score report, accommodation, retaking an exam, and any other questions, please check this link: https://clep.collegeboard.org-for-students, or contact CLEP customer service at 866-630-9305 or for International 212-713-8000

9. Can I schedule to take the CLEP exam at NR Computer Learning Center (NRCLC)?

Once you have the voucher for the exam, you can schedule to take the exam at NRCLC – an authorized testing center for CLEP Exams. To take the exam at NRCLC, please follow the steps listed below:

  1. Go to the NRCLC Website: https://www.nrclc.com
  2. Click the ‘Testing Center’ and click again on CLEP exam or enter the URL: https://www.nrclc.com/testing_center/clep
  3. To schedule for the exam, scroll down on steps#3 click the “here” button to register for your exam.

10. What do I need to bring with me to the testing center on the day of the exam?

On the day of the exam, you will need to bring the following two items:

  • The Registration Confirmation letter for the CLEP exam with the voucher/ticket number for the exam
  • an unexpired original and official government-issued Id with picture and signature. If you sign as military, you must bring your military Id with you. An unexpired driver’s license will be sufficient.

Note: A copy (not original) of an ID is not an acceptable form of ID. Neither an expired ID is an acceptable ID for taking the exam.
