Summer Hands-on Computer Classes

For Kids Age 10 to 18 years

 

NR Computer Learning Center (NRCLC), in collaboration with Irvine Valley College (IVC) offers kids summer camps in Orange (California) for ages 10 to 18 with hands-on computer classes in the area of creating 2D Animated Games using Flash and ActionScript, website design & development using HTML, DHTML, CSS and software development using Java and C++ programming Language. Following is the list of hands-on classroom training offered at Irvine Valley College and NR Computer Learning Center:

Summer CampComputer Basic & Window –The hands-on course provides student the knowledge and skills required to identify different types of computers, the components of a personal computer including microprocessors, motherboard, flash drive, hard disk, Memory, Keyboard, mouse and Input/output devices. The students will also learn to use Window Vista to manage files & folders, maintain their system, run application, using control pane, printing files and installing programs. This course will also help student prepare for the IC3 Part A Certification Exam.

Build Your Own Computer - A hands-on course that teaches students to build computers from scratch! Learn to build your own computer, install motherboard, format hard drives,  load software, eliminate viruses, run and troubleshoot the software on your computer. This course will also help student prepare for the IC3 Part A Certification Exam. Prereq: Computer Basic or equivalent.

Microsoft Office 2010 – A hands on course that introduces students to use Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel. The students will learn to create a reports, greeting cards, fliers and newsletters with various font style and size, border and shades, bullets & numbering style, pictures, clipart, WordArt and AutoShapes. They will also learn to create eye catching multimedia presentations by learning to set theme, add clip arts, auto shapes, pictures, Word Art, sound, movie clip, animation and transition. Using Microsoft Excel, students will also learn to create simple spreadsheets with formula, flowchart, graph and pictures. This course will also help student prepare for Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) Certification Exam and IC3 Part B Certification Exam. Prereq: Computer Basic or equivalent.

Video Editing & Special Effects - If you want to learn to develop and edit a digital movie then this class is for you. You will learn to add background sounds and music, special effects, text, cut unwanted movie clips, merge movie clips, add pictures and to upload movie to YouTube for friends and family to view it. Prereq: Computer Basic or equivalent.

Create 2D Games - The hands-on course is designed for students wanting to learn the basic element of creating a 2D game using a GameMaker software. The students will learn to create games that include sprites, backgrounds image, sounds and music, objects, events, actions and rooms. This is an excellent introductory course to programming if you are planning to become a game programmer – one of the hottest career fields today or preparing for Adobe Certification Associate (ACA) Exam. Prereq: Computer Basic or equivalent.

Game Programming with Java - Basic - Programming I is an introductory-level course where you will learn the basics of Java programming to build software. You will learn to use variables, common functions, expressions, flow control, loops and more to develop an application! This is an excellent introductory course to programming if you are planning to take an AP Course in Computer Science, build a career in software development or become a game programmer – one of the hottest career fields today or preparing for Microsoft Technology Associate (MTA) Certification Exam. Prereq: Create 2D Games or equivalent.

Game Programming with Java-Intermediate - Once you’ve mastered the basics Java programming, then you’re ready to learn some of the tougher Object Oriented concepts such as classes, Objects, Method Overloading, Constructors, Destructors and Polymorphism. You will also learn to use arrays, strings, pointers, dynamic data and more to develop advance application. By the end of the course, you will be able to develop interactive application. This course is also good for high school students planning to take an AP Course in Computer Science or preparing for Microsoft Technology Associate Certification (MTA) Exam. Prereq: Programming with Java Basic or equivalent.

Programming in C++ - This is an introductory-level course where you will learn the basics of C++ programming and Game Maker to build software. You will learn to use, common functions, expressions, flow control, loops and more to develop an application! This is an excellent introductory course to programming if you are planning to take an AP Course in Computer Science, build a career in software development or become a game programmer – one of the hottest career fields today. or preparing for Microsoft Technology Associate (MTA) Certification Exam. Prereq: Create 2D Games or equivalent.

Website Design - If you want to learn to develop and publish your own website, this is the class for you. You will learn to create web pages with text, pictures and hyperlinks to other websites and web pages. They will also learn to upload and manage the website on the web server and gain basic knowledge of Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) and Cascade Style Sheet (CSS), organize the Website content, develop color schemes, add graphics links, insert multi-media elements, and more. This is an excellent introductory course to programming if you are planning to become a game programmer – one of the hottest career fields today or preparing for Adobe Certification Associate (ACA) Exam Prereq: Computer Basic or equivalent.

Dynamic Website Design with JavaScript - If you want to enhance your web site by adding dynamics and interactive features to your web page using JavaScript (an easy-to-learn programming language) then this class is for you. You will learn to use JavaScript components such as attributes, variables, expressions, functions, objects and methods to enhance the website by being able to add clock, animated mouse, drop down menu, alert messages, perform calculations, check data in the forms, add interactive games, add special effects to the images and text, customize graphics selections, dynamically modify color, image and text and more. or preparing for Microsoft Technology Associate (MTA) Certification Exam. Prereq: Website Design or equivalent.

The direction to IVC campus:

  • 405 South: Take exit 4 for University Dr (left) toward Jeffrey Rd, Turn left onto University Dr, Continue onto Jeffrey Rd,  Turn right onto Irvine Center Dr, Turn right.
  • 405 North: Take exit 4 for Jeffrey Rd toward University Dr, Turn right onto Jeffrey Rd, Turn right onto Irvine Center Dr, Turn right.
  • I-5 South: Take exit 97 for Jeffrey Rd, Turn right onto Jeffrey Rd, Turn left onto Irvine Center Dr,  Turn right.

Parking: 30 min visitor parking available at lot 4 & 5.

Snacks:
During the morning session, there will be a 10 min snack break at 10:30 am.
For the afternoon session, the 10 min snack break will be at 2:30 PM.
Students can bring a snack to eat during the break time.

Lunch:
If a student is staying for the morning and afternoon session, there will be lunch break from 12:00 – 1:00 PM. During the lunch hour, everyone will walks together to the IVC cafeteria and walks back together from cafeteria to the lab. The cafeteria is on campus and close to the computer lab. Our staff will stay with the students at all time. The students have the option to bring their our lunch with them or can purchase the lunch at the cafeteria.

Program Director: Vazi Okhandiar. She has over 20 years of software development and 15 years of teaching experience. She is a Microsoft Certified Trainer (MCT). She has MBA from University of California, Irvine, MS Computer Science from  Illinois Institute of Technology and BS Electrical Engineering from University of California. She was the Head of Computer Science Department at National University, Costa Mesa.
